Okay, after you read this review, you might ask, why did I watch this? Well, 1) I like documentaries, and 2) gender reassignment is always an interesting subject.
This is a story about identical twin brothers, Mark and Alex, who later become Oliver and Claire. While in their teens, neither felt quite right in their skin, as Mark felt more attraction to boys, and Alex took on more female mannerisms. From their depression and parent's divorce, the troubled teens get into drugs, and even attempt a double-suicide by carbon monoxide inhalation. You know, the old “run a hose from the tailpipe and roll up the windows trick.” After hours of trying, they gave up, but continued their paths of self-discovery, moved to San Francisco, took on new identities, and eventually got their parents support.
Claire further explorered the option of gender reassignment after hooking up with a childhood friend who had it done, and this is where we see the pic of "Becca’s" newly formed vagina. The rest of the story revolves around the parents’ acceptance, and Oliver and his boyfriend, who move to Europe and Prague for school and work.
Nothing really new to the “I’m not who you think I am” story, since I’ve seen better footage on the Health channels. The title Red Without Blue, refers to the color of clothing the twins were dressed in as youth, and also the time they spent apart in foster care. Watch Transamerica and you’ll be more entertained.
