Usually sheep are the unfortunate ones either by plummeting off a cliff to their demise, getting hit by cars, or being slaughtered, but in Black Sheep, the tables are turned. Nope, no Chris Farley here, just people-eating wool-wearers who have mad sheep disease.
A couple of animal rights activists steal a canister that has a genetically mutated baby sheep in it. While trying to flee, the canister gets broken, and the sheep bites the assailant, then wanders off to the herd. What ensues next, are pissed off blood-hungry sheep, and anyone who’s bitten, will eventually live the same fate.
Farting and driving sheep are kind of funny, but the laughter level in this one is like very dry British humor and pretty much non-existent. Wasn’t New Zealand founded by the British? Ahh, that might explain it.
Anyway, the rest of the story is about Angus, Henry, and the hero, Tucker. Sheep are genetically mutated by mixing human DNA, which we gather occurs through Angus’s procreation with his favorite ewes. Henry is Angus’s brother, and is terrified of sheep, and Tucker is the farm’s caretaker. There’s a small love story between Henry and the female animal rights activist, who have to battle Grant, the first-bitten. Tucker also gets bitten, but ends up finding the cure, and saving the day.
This is not a great movie, but it is very unique in storyline and has some great effects. When the humans are morphing into sheep, it reminded me of An American Werewolf in London. It’s definitely worth a watch, but unfortunately, will not make the list of the best independent movies of the year. Dimension Extreme did save face with this title, so we can only hope that similar decision making will follow suit when picking up titles to distribute.
