CASTLE OF BLOOD

{overall rating}-* * *

{action}- Think of a black and white John Wayne western. Then imagine that sort of fight scenes in a horror film in the same era.

{humor}- Campy fun. But not typical camp. Just watch.

{blood}- I’m shaking my head yes but I’m saying “no.”

{gore}- Nice little candlestick number.

{nudity}- Topless female.

{acting}- Period acting in the early 60’s. Even the dubbing can’t be any cheesier than the original French portrayals.

{plot}- Edgar Allen Poe adaptation. Nism. (need I say more.)

{film quality}- Great black and white in the theatre kind of feel.

{entertainment factor}- Thumbs up.

{Aprox. amount of time spent fast forwarding}- Zero.

Castle of blood is an adaptation of a Edgar Allen Poe story. Lately I’ve been finding myself more and more interested into horror adaptations from literature. What I do like about sixties horror done well is the dialog is written in an older more sophisticated English. Not the dumbed down dialect we are all guilty of speaking this days. This punctual nature helps carry the story along. It makes the subject matter seem more interesting because its unfamiliar. It sort of has the same feel of picking apart written Spanish in an instruction manual. Have you ever cought yourself turning back and forth between the two sides of a dvd player book and going, “Oh!I just have to add an ‘e’ to important for the Spanish word?” Edgar is in a bar telling a drunken story of his and a reporter challenges that its fiction. Poe says that he is simply a reporter and all of his stories are about his life. The reporter is than challenged by an associate of Poe Diddy to stay the night at a haunted castle. Hmm I wonder if there will be blood? The reporter is seduced by the always beautiful Barbera Steele who fails to mention... she’s dead. She is being forced to re-enact her death. Then comes the Dr. of Barbera’s past. To show the reporter her story. I’ll watch anything with Barbera Steele. This included. Worth the rent and maybe then some.
